Last week I got down some of our baby stuff from the attic in preparation for Micaiah’s arrival. We needed the baby carrier, the stroller for the baby carrier, the playpen, and our box of bottles and other newborn stuff. It was kind of fun to see all of those things again and to realize that Cai will be here so soon. It’s hard to believe that Charis used to fit in the baby carrier! She sure has grown up fast!

There have been two old silent films that I’ve really wanted to get copies of for a long time. I’ve had them on my TiVo wishlist for years, but they’ve never been shown on tv during that time (or at least not on the channels I receive). But then again, I can admit that the market for silent films on tv is probably pretty small. :-) Anyway, one of them (Greed, 1924) has never been released on DVD anywhere, and the other (The Crowd, 1928) has never been released on DVD in the US, but recently became available as an import.

I’ve been watching eBay and used items on Amazon to try to pick up a reasonably priced VHS tape of Greed. Even the videotapes have been really expensive for the past few years, but lately the prices have come down a lot. I was able to purchase a tape recently for less than $20, which is great. And I also went ahead and ordered an import copy of The Crowd from Amazon (also less than $20), so both of the movies are on their way to me. I’m excited to receive them and finally get a chance to watch both of them.

I recently got a new keyboard for my computer at home. I’m really pretty picky about mice and keyboards, so finding a new one takes me a long time. Last year I got a Logitech G7 mouse that I really like after my friend Carrie recommended it to me. It’s a nice laser mouse with quick-swap rechargeable batties. The only thing I don’t like about it is that the scroll wheel on it is pretty clicky, and I prefer a smooth wheel like my wife has on her mouse, but considering how great the mouse is otherwise, I can handle that, but I do hope they change it in the next version.

But on to the keyboard. I chose a Logitech DiNovo Edge, and I like it quite a bit. It uses a rechargeable battery like my mouse does, and I think I could do just as well with regular batteries, but the charge seems to last a really long time, so that’s okay. The keys have a nice feel to them. They are really quiet, which I like (I think Joy likes her keys to be a little clickier), and they are kind of a cross between a regular keyboard and a keyboard on a laptop. So it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I like it. The only thing I’m not crazy about is the lack of a number keypad. Now I understand they were probably going for small and sleek, but a version with a number keypad wouldn’t exactly be unreasonable.

Joy and I are thinking of switching cell phone carriers. We’ve been using Cingular for several years and at this point we are out of contract with them. There are a couple of spots on my drive home where my cell phone drops pretty much every day, and it’s only a ten minute drive, so that’s getting pretty frustrating. We basically have it narrowed down to Sprint and Verizon. The problem is that I am really picky about cell phones, so I’m not sure exactly what I want to get. There is a phone that is supposed to come out on Verizon in the next month or two (it has already been delayed several times), so I think I’m going to hold out to see that phone before we make a final decision.

We recently got a new lawnmower. Last time we bought a lawnmower, we got one of the cheapest ones we could find. It always worked pretty well, but it was not self-propelled, and sometimes if the grass was really long it could get a little bogged down. So this time we spent a little more and got a self-propelled model with a little more power. After using it three times now (including the lovely night adventure I wrote about recently), I have to say that self-propelled is really nice. It just takes a lot less effort to get the mowing done. I can get the lawn finished a little faster than before, and I’m less tired afterwards. So maybe I’m just lazy, but it really is pretty nice. Hopefully it will continue to work well and will last us a long time.
