Thoughts And Quotes

“So often in autumn I want to go lean my head against a tree and ask what it feels like to lose so much, to be so empty, so detached, to take off one’s shoes that well, and then simply to stand and wait for God’s refilling. It sounds so simple, so easy. It isn’t easy. But it is possible.”

from “Seasons of Your Heart” by Macrina Wiederkehr

The following quote from Jason Upton’s blog just really hit me. He posted it almost two years ago but I just found it yesterday. He’s talking about how following Jesus is not the same thing as just admiring him, and then he says this:

“I want to follow you more than I believe in you. Believing you has not made me follow you as much as following you has made me believe you and trust you.”

“What dreadful hot weather we have! It keeps me in a continual state of inelegance.”

(Jane Austen)

I’ve been saving this quote all summer waiting for the right time to use it, and our recent (tied) record of 30 days in a row with temperatures at or above 90 degrees certainly makes it appropriate, not to mention several individual day records with temperatures over 100.

“And Crispin Crispian shall ne’er go by from this day until the ending of the world but we in it shall be remembered. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers, For he today who sheds his blood with me shall be my brother, Be he ne’er so vile, this day shall gentle his condition, and gentlemen in England now abed shall think themselves acursed they were not here, and hold their manhoods cheap whilst any speaks, that fought with us upon St. Crispin’s day!”

(from the movie “Henry V”)

One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!”

But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

Luke 23:39-43 (ESV)

“You need the willingness to fail all the time. You have to generate many ideas and then you have to work very hard only to discover that they don’t work. And you keep doing that over and over until you find one that does work.”

(John Backus discussing software development)

“If I stand, let me stand on the promise that you will pull me through,
and if I can’t let me fall on the grace that first brought me to you.

If I sing, let me sing for the joy that has born in me things songs,
and if I weep let it be as a man who is longing for his home.”

(from “If I Stand” by Rich Mullins)
